Sleeping like a baby? More than 9 million cribs, sleep products recalled in two years
December 10, 2009 by admin · 5 Comments
Filed under: Kids and Money , Recalls , Shopping , Consumer Ally Nearly 9.5 million sleep products for infants and toddlers — cribs, bassinets and play yards — have been recalled in the past two years following 16 deaths and more than 2,200 incidents. Yet, many of the products that have proven fatal are still in use, putting children sleeping in them in extreme danger. The child safety advocacy group, Kids in Danger , tallied the enormity of the recalls in a just-released report . Shortly after the report was released, yet another sleeping product was recalled — the Amby Baby Motion Bed/Hammock — following the deaths of two infants. Nicola Johns knows just how important it is to get the word out about these unsafe baby products.

The art of downsizing: Know what to keep, what to toss
December 9, 2009 by admin · 4 Comments
Filed under: Extracurriculars , Home A recent WalletPop post on the trend toward smaller homes prompted lively debate, an d its associated poll, asking whether you were considering downsizing for financial reasons, currently shows “yes” nosing ahead of “no.” Fewer rooms, less square footage and, often, less storage mean paring back, a process owners of smaller homes describe as both painful and liberating. Some told WalletPop they turned to Craigslist, eBay and charity to dispose of their excess. Many still keep a few overlarge items in storage. “My parents were Depression-era people who saved everything; I had to stop that and read everything I can to help me discard,” said Maryann Purgason of Hogansville, Georgia, a downsizing pioneer when she moved to a 2,000-square-foot home more than a decade ago. “An abused woman and children were able to set up housekeeping with much that I had been saving.” Continue reading The art of downsizing: Know what to keep, what to toss The art of downsizing: Know what to keep, what to toss originally appeared on WalletPop Blog on Wed, 09 Dec 2009 18:00:00 EST

Eco Toys: This holiday season, it’s very easy being green
December 9, 2009 by admin · 4 Comments
Filed under: Kids and Money , Shopping , Green According to Kermit, It’s not easy being green , but the frog is going to have to change his tune. Being green is getting easier every day. What was once labeled ‘hippie’ has become hip and whether we’ve embraced the eco-centric lifestyle or are taking baby steps, most of us have realized it’s not just cool, but important to care about our environment. As the demand for earth-friendly choices trickles into every aspect of the marketplace, “green” toys are getting increasingly easier to find and cheaper to buy — just in time for the holidays. The power of the purse has always been an effective way for consumers to communicate which business practices they support and which they do not. Money talks. The 2009 Cone Consumer Environmental Survey found that in spite of the economy, 34% of American consumers said they are more likely to buy environmentally responsible products than they did one year ago. Some 70% of Americans indicated that they are paying attention to what companies are doing with regard to the environment today, even if they aren’t buying right now. “The fact that consumers continue to be interested in the environment and mindful of corporate efforts, even in the midst of a grueling recession, is evidence that this is more than just a passing trend,” said Jonathan Yohannan, senior vice president of corporate responsibility for Boston-based Cone. “Environmental responsibility is not just an expectation in times of prosperity.” Continue reading Eco Toys: This holiday season, it’s very easy being green Eco Toys: This holiday season, it’s very easy being green originally appeared on WalletPop Blog on Wed, 09 Dec 2009 17:30:00 EST

Could the age of ‘instant credit’ be over?
December 9, 2009 by admin · 3 Comments
Filed under: Credit , Credit cards New credit card regulations being considered by the Federal Reserve could put an end to that all-too-common pitch customers hear when they check out: “Would you like to open a Such-and-Such Store Name credit card today?” What the Fed has in mind is to require credit card issuers to get information about your income before they determine whether you’re credit-worthy. It’s a reasonable thought in light of the fact that we wouldn’t be in our current financial predicament if we’d kept closer tabs on how much people could afford to pay back. Right now, retailers can pull your credit score from a nationally accessible database and use that to determine whether to issue you a store credit card and what your rate will be. Filed under: Banks , Extracurriculars , Fraud , Banking-checking-account , Banking-savings-account Remember when Uncle Billy in It’s a Wonderful Life loses the bank deposit, and George’s troubles ensue (and a holiday classic is born)? Or when Loretta Castorini in Moonstruck forgets a bank deposit as part of a series of comedic misunderstandings? Bank deposit bloopers happen in real-life as well, but the dollar amounts are considerably higher and the bank deposit bloopers are often caused by the bank, not the customer.

Would you pay for a risky treatment, or play it safe?
December 9, 2009 by admin · 3 Comments
Filed under: Health If it were up to you, would you take risks with your health? Or with the course of treatment you’re paying for? Most likely not, according to a new study of 216 patients with arthritis and other similar diseases. The study’s researchers tested patients’ willingness to take a hypothetical “new” drug that carried important benefits but also a small risk of serious side effects. And when push came to shove, the study participants weren’t willing to gamble when given the decision to make all their own health care choices
